Moment With SUNSTAR , POWER FM and DYRF

SUNSTAR
From the inputs that the speaker shared to us, these are my insights:
  • Newspaper publications undergo a careful procedures and processes .
  • Newspaper lead must capsulized the very main and vital points of a news story in such a way that the readers can understand and grasp directly the story without reading further for the details since people are always in a hurry.
  • There are some newspapers, SunStar is one, who does not require a fixed number of articles (quota) that must be submitted everyday (e.g. Five articles everyday) because it may result to lesser quality of a news story and how it is being written.( The bottom line is quality over quantity).
  • There are really hardships of being a reporter or news writers where anytime a reporter must be ready for any event or news that may happen .
  • Police beat is not anymore for amateurs and neophytes only but is also for senior reporters since it contains dangers and violence, and complicated and delicate mishaps and happenings where confidence, courage, skill, and good analysis is vital.
  • Though, it happened that print was about to decline because people are already prone to broadcast and visual, yet it will never perished because it has still advantages over broadcast such as people can review stories in print unlike in broadcast, and places without electricity or access for broadcast can still know the news through the newspaper as long as the circulation can reach the place.
  • A newspaper's color, design, and layout are factors to be considered also to catch readers' attention.
Remarks:
The speaker was really knowledgeable about print industry and was effective in delivering her inputs .We haven't seen the procedures and technical side of publishing a newspaper but I understand it because their reporters were not around and it was not yet the scheduled time for the publication. However, it will be better if next time what we missed will be realized.

DYRF
This station has an AM frequency of 12.5 KHZ. It is located in F. Manalo St.,Cor. Gen. Mavelon Avenue, Cebu City. It was created by the Redentorist Fathers on 1771 and was sold to the SVD on 1976 and still operated until now. Their type of business is by broadcast means and commission profits on commercial broad products. The station manager is Fr. Joseph Soson, SVD. Their kinds of program includes commentary, information, news, music, and entertainment. This station runs from 4 AM to 12 midnight. The genre of their listeners ranges from ages 20 to 60 years up. Around 21 employees are working within the station.
(Tel.No. 253-8846).

LEARNINGS:
  • In the AM Station, DYRF, the importance of Cebuano dialect was being implied by the anchormen. It stresses that being a Visayan and an media practitioner aspirant, I must also master the Cebuano dialect in the air since it is the masses who listens the program.
  • In the corresponding FM Station, Power Fm, I had seen how a DJ talk and handle himself with the apparatuses in a DJ booth. It showed me that there are lots of factors that a Dee jay must consider in airing a program aside from the verbal ability - checking of equipment first before starting and the handling with the equipments comfortably and above all "no dead air".
  • According to, it is better to place a station in elevated place or in higher structures so that the anchorman or Dee jay can view the entire city or place and therefore can tell the people about the weather and traffic condition.
